Tasmania with Kids — Sarah's Tips

🦘

Wildlife is everywhere

Wombats wander through Cradle Mountain Lodge at dusk. Pademelons, quolls, and Tasmanian devils are genuinely wild here. Kids are absolutely mesmerised.

🍕

The food scene is world-class

Hobart's Salamanca Market, the Agrarian Kitchen cooking school, and the Huon Valley apple orchards — Tasmania is a genuine food destination. Kids eat incredibly well here.

🎨

MONA is unmissable

The Museum of Old and New Art is one of the world's most extraordinary museums. Older kids and teens love it. Take the MONA ROMA ferry from Hobart for the full experience.

🥾

Pace the wilderness slowly

Tasmania rewards slow travel. Don't try to see everything. Pick one wilderness area — Freycinet, Cradle Mountain, or the Southwest — and go deep.

🌡️

Pack for four seasons in one day

Tasmanian weather changes fast. Even in summer, pack a waterproof layer, fleece, and sunscreen. The wilderness areas can be cold even in January.

✈️

Fly into Hobart or Launceston

Hobart is the best base for the south (Freycinet, Port Arthur, MONA). Launceston suits the north (Cradle Mountain, Bay of Fires). Consider flying into one and out the other.

♥ NEURODIVERSE FRIENDLY

Raspberry Picking in Hobart

One of Tasmania’s most magical and sensory-friendly experiences — and one of our family’s absolute favourites.

🫐Why it’s perfect for neurodiverse kids
  • Repetitive, calming picking motion that many sensory-seeking kids find deeply satisfying
  • Open outdoor space with no crowds, no queues, and no overwhelming noise
  • Immediate reward loop — pick a berry, eat a berry. Kids stay engaged for hours
  • Tactile sensory experience: the feel of the berry, the smell of the plants, the warmth of the sun
  • No pressure, no performance — kids can go at their own pace entirely

📍 Where to go

The Huon Valley, just 45 minutes south of Hobart, is Tasmania’s berry heartland. Pick-your-own farms open from December through March. Look for Lucaston Park and Westerway Raspberry Farm — both are family-run, relaxed, and genuinely beautiful.

Raspberry picking in the Huon Valley was one of those rare travel moments where every single one of our kids was completely in their element. No meltdowns, no boredom, no screens. Just pure joy.
