Bali with 5 Kids: The Villas That Actually Work

Infinity pools, rice terraces, and a private chef who makes chicken nuggets without judgment. Our complete guide to Bali for big families.

Bali is one of those destinations that sounds like it should be impossible with a big family — too chaotic, too spiritual, too far. And then you arrive, and a smiling woman in a sarong places a flower garland around your neck, your kids spot a rice terrace and immediately want to run through it, and you think: why did we wait so long? Bali with children is extraordinary. Bali with five kids is a full-contact sport — and one of the best things we've ever done.

Why Bali Works for Big Families

The secret to Bali with a big family is the villa model. Unlike hotels, where you're constantly negotiating connecting rooms and corridor logistics, a private villa gives you a compound. Your own pool. Your own kitchen. Your own outdoor space where the kids can be loud and feral and completely free. Most villas come with a full staff — a villa manager, a pool attendant, and a private chef who will cook whatever your children will actually eat without making you feel judged. We've had chefs who made chicken nuggets from scratch. We've had chefs who taught our kids to make nasi goreng. The villa model is, frankly, the only way to travel with a large family.

Villa Roma, Seminyak — Our Favourite

Villa Roma in Dyanapura, Seminyak is our go-to Bali villa. It's a beautifully renovated 5-bedroom compound with a generous pool, lush tropical gardens, and a location that's walkable to Seminyak's best restaurants and just 14 minutes to Double Six Beach. The villa sleeps 10 guests across 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms — perfect for a big family or two families travelling together. The staff are warm and genuinely invested in making your stay perfect. The villa is styled with Balinese art and textiles throughout — it feels like a home, not a hotel. Our kids still talk about the pool at Villa Roma. It's the kind of place where you book one week and immediately start thinking about how to come back for two. Book through BedroomVillas.com — rates from USD $57/night and it's been viewed 37 times today, so don't wait.

Grand Hyatt Bali — When You Want the Resort Experience

If you want the full resort experience rather than a villa, the Grand Hyatt Bali in Nusa Dua is exceptional. It's a Balinese water palace — five outdoor pools, a dedicated kids club (Camp Hyatt), beachfront access, and interconnecting rooms that actually work for big families. The grounds are extraordinary — you could spend an entire week without leaving the resort and never feel bored. The staff-to-guest ratio is high and the service reflects it. For families who want the villa feel but with resort amenities on tap, the Grand Hyatt is the answer.

What to Do with Kids in Bali

Beyond the villa pool (which, honestly, could be your entire holiday and nobody would complain), Bali has a genuinely extraordinary range of family activities. The Bali Safari and Marine Park is a full day out — the kids can hand-feed elephants and watch the Bali Agung show. Waterbom Bali in Kuta is one of the best waterparks in Asia — the slides are world-class and the lazy river is the great equaliser for all ages. For something more cultural, the Ubud Monkey Forest is always a hit (keep your sunglasses on your face, not your head — the monkeys are thieves). The rice terraces at Tegallalang are genuinely breathtaking and the walk through them with small children is one of those slow, golden travel memories that stays with you.

Eating in Bali with Kids

Bali is one of the most food-friendly destinations in the world for families. The Balinese genuinely love children and restaurants will accommodate almost any request without batting an eye. Our favourite family spots in Seminyak include Merah Putih for a special dinner (the architecture alone is worth the visit), Motel Mexicola for the chaos and colour, and La Plancha on the beach for sunset with the kids digging in the sand. For breakfast, Revolver Espresso is non-negotiable. For a lazy lunch, Ku De Ta or Potato Head Beach Club — both have kids menus and enough visual spectacle to keep everyone entertained.

Practical Notes for Big Families

Bali is genuinely easy to navigate with a big family. Grab cars are reliable and affordable. Most villas will organise a driver for the week — highly recommended, as it removes all the logistics of getting around with multiple children. The currency is Indonesian Rupiah and cash is king at markets and local warungs, though most tourist-facing businesses take cards. The time zone is WITA (Central Indonesia Time) — 3 hours behind AEST in summer. Sunscreen is expensive in Bali, so bring your own. The same goes for quality insect repellent. The best time to visit is April to October during the dry season — though we've been in January and the rain is warm and brief and the kids think it's an adventure.
